Rockwell House Seeks a New Chaplain

Episcopal Chaplain at the Rockwell House at Washington University in St. Louis

Summary : The Rockwell House at Washington University in St. Louis is a spiritual home away from home for college students and it seeks a chaplain who is excited and energetic about this ministry. The Chaplain at the Rockwell House is a full-time paid position with benefits and is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri.  The chaplain maintains and operates the Rockwell House and is a spiritual leader on the university campus, providing undergraduates and graduate students opportunities for worship, spiritual growth, leadership development and service. The chaplain provides a bridge between the campus and the diocese and wider church, working to strengthen collaborative ties with nearby congregations, participate in the community of other diocesan campus ministries, and provincial and wider-church gatherings. Along with the Wash U campus, the Rockwell House serves students from all over St. Louis, including Saint Louis University, Webster University, St. Louis Community College, among others.
Primary Tasks:
1.       Organize, and develop a community of Christian discipleship, supporting and reaching out to undergraduate and graduate students at Washington University, Saint Louis University, and other St. Louis area higher education campuses.
2.       Maintain an ever-evolving and loving environment and open spiritual home for students
3.       Design and lead worship for weekly worship and special occasions
4.       Organize and lead over-night spiritual retreats and mission trips
5.       Partner with the Episcopal Service Corps in Old North St. Louis to provide a bridge to both short-term mission projects and long-term ministry possibilities
6.       Provide spiritual formation through pastoral care, teaching, preaching, and preparation for baptism or confirmation
7.       Work with ecumenical partners, especially with the ELCA Lutheran Campus Ministry
8.       Provide guidance in transitions for incoming and graduating students
9.       Provide discernment opportunities for lay and ordained ministry
10.   Plan and manage weekly gatherings (May include, shopping, cooking, and organizing.)
11.    Identify and equip student leaders for ministry with and among their peers, including mentoring and overseeing the student leadership team
12.   Perform the administrative tasks required of the ministry, including house maintenance and upkeep, budget creation and financial planning
13.   Develop and maintain ministry partnerships with parishes in proximity to the house
14.   Actively engage and assist in the effort to establish collaborative ministry among the other campus ministries in the diocese

•        Ability to use social media and website tools to promote the ministry
•        Professional accountability and transparency
•        A strong understanding of millennials and a strong grasp on campus culture
•        A willingness to do the dirty work: cleaning, cooking, mowing grass, etc…
Required Education & Experience :  Minimum of Bachelor of Art or Sciences degree, but M.Div or equivalent preferred. Candidates are expected to have had some ministry experience and an ability to serve in this capacity for at least two years.  A working knowledge of the culture and structure of The Episcopal Church is expected.
